Located on the southern end of the Gold Coast, Coolangatta rests on the Queensland and New South Wales border, between wide sandy beaches and the Tweed River.
Coolangatta boasts a wonderful patrolled beach with some excellent surfing spots, including neighbouring Kirra, and Greenmount's Snapper Rocks. The fantastic beaches are fringed by attractive shaded parklands, and are ideal for enjoying the relaxed lifestyle and great views north to Surfers Paradise.
Adjoining Coolangatta is its twin town of Tweed Heads. The Captain Cook Memorial Lighthouse at Point Danger is in the centre of the two towns, allowing you to stand in both Queensland and New South Wales at the same time, while admiring the spectacular views.
A number of fabulous shops, trendy cafes and restaurants can be found along the beachfront at Marine Parade and in nearby Griffith Street. The art and craft markets are held along the beachfront at Marine Parade on the second Sunday of each month, offering unique bargains and special gifts.
Coolangatta has a lively nightlife, with several great al fresco restaurants and a number of bars and clubs hosting live entertainment. The Wintersun festival, Australia's leading retro nostalgia event, invades the city each year with popular 50s and 60s rock 'n' roll music, costumes, dancing and Hot Rod cars.
There is plenty of accommodation around Coolangatta, ranging from motels and hotels to premier resorts overlooking the beach. Getting around is easy, with buses travelling along the coast to the major Gold Coast attractions, and the airport just minutes away.
